Utah Rivers Council is forming a Citizens' Committee to coordinate a citizens' response to the oil spill that has devastated Red Butte Creek . . .
Utah Rivers Council is seeking volunteers and leaders to serve on a Citizens' Committee to Restore Red Butte Creek in response to the recent oil spill that has been such a catastrophe for Red Butte Creek and the Jordan River. Oil has reached the Great Salt Lake and is now impacting Farmington Bay, a crucial stop for migratory birds. The carcinogens within the oil have been irritating local residents who have complained about nausea and left their homes to avoid breathing the fumes. The oil along Red Butte Creek and the Jordan River has covered birds, contaminated water sources for fish and wildlife, saturated rocks and soils along both river corridors. The oil left along these river corridors must be painstakingly removed to ensure that shallow aquifers are not contaminated in coming years. Will YOU help us make sure this mess is cleaned up? Utah Rivers Council and area leaders are forming a Citizens' Committee to Restore Red Butte Creek to ensure that ‘Clean Up’ means the total removal of all oil pollution from Red Butte Creek, Jordan River and the Great Salt Lake. The Committee will also work to ensure that adequate goals and resources are established to ensure long-term restoration of these priceless ecosystems. We will also work to ensure that full and appropriate long-term monitoring of health impacts occurs. Other goals will likely be added as the group convenes. To volunteer for the Citizens' Committee or for more information please contact Utah Rivers Council at 801 486-4776. |
