Basic Outdoor Water Conservation |

Replacing grass that requires a lot of water has the highest potential for water savings outdoors. There are, however, smaller measures that are still important:
Proper Lawn Watering
- Water your lawn less frequently, but allow the water to seep in deeper into the ground
- Avoid watering between 10 am and 6 pm, or when it's hot and/or windy
- Cancel your sprinklers after a good rain
- Check your sprinkling system often for leaks or broken sprinklers
- Consider installing a drip irrigation system
- Use a sprinkler system with a rain sensor automatic shutoff feature
- Change your watering schedule to adapt to the weather. That means turning it off when it
rains, scaling back when it's cool, and adjusting to each season. Checking your sprinkler
clock may need to occur weekly
- For a general watering schedule, see http://conservewater.utah.gov/Monthly/
Proper Lawn Care
- Mow your lawn at a 3-inch (or higher) height. Don't bag the clippings, mulch them back
on the lawn
- Avoid fertilizing until absolutely necessary. The earlier you fertilize, the earlier lawn grows,
the earlier you have to water, the earlier you have to mow.
Hoses
- If you water the lawn with a hose, make sure to water just the lawn, not the sidewalk
- When washing your car fill a bucket with water, or use a hose attachment that keeps the
water from flowing until you need it
- Check your hose, hose bib, and any hose joints for leaks and fix any you find
- Fill the kids play pools only once, and place them over the lawn
- Sweep your driveway and sidewalk-don't use the hose to spray them off
Miscellaneous
- Cover your pool or hot tub when you're not using it
- Properly maintain pool chemicals so you only have to fill pools once per season
